Lattices that shape emission

Can a large or unusual cavity emit into a useful collective mode?

Editorial synthesis by the site author across the reading notes below. It is an interpretation, not a finding reported by any single paper. Each note keeps the authors’ findings separate from commentary and links the original source.

Working summary

Photonic-crystal feedback, quasi-bound states in the continuum and moiré patterns offer different ways to engineer dispersion, leakage and confinement. Finite size and the gain medium decide which of these modes actually lase.

Connections

Band engineering links PCSELs, twisted slabs, polariton lattices and coupled VCSELs. Shared geometry does not make their gain mechanisms or operating regimes equivalent.

Questions and limits

Infinite-periodic band structures omit edges and finite-array disorder. Large Q alone is not an output-power objective; useful extraction requires radiation.
