IDEA / COMPUTATION

From simulation to design

Can we optimize the optical behaviour we actually need?

Editorial synthesis by the site author across the reading notes below. It is an interpretation, not a finding reported by any single paper. Each note keeps the authors’ findings separate from commentary and links the original source.

Working summary

Automatic differentiation, adjoint methods and new matrix algorithms make repeated electromagnetic solves more useful for design. The advance is often in the computational workflow rather than a new physical model.

Connections

Better interfaces improve the forward solution; stable derivatives make it optimizable. Statistical emission and laser-aware objectives then determine what to optimize.

Draws on the reading notes for: Why interface rules matter, Grating profiles as polygons, Layer scattering without eigenmodes, Matrix functions replace eigensolves, Differentiable full-tensor optics, Many inputs, shared algebra, Optimize an ensemble, not every dipole, Thousands of incoherent emitters, Optimize a laser, not just a cavity.

Questions and limits

A fast gradient of an unconverged model is still misleading. Report accuracy, hardware, basis size and the exact operation timed alongside any speedup.
